National Women’s Blood Pressure Awareness Week 2026

National Women’s Blood Pressure Awareness Week 2026 is October 18-24. The only way to know if we have high blood pressure, is to have it measured.

National Women’s Blood Pressure Awareness Week 2026

What is the (United States) National Women’s Blood Pressure Awareness Week (NWBPAW) 2026?

In NWBPAW Theme – Blood Pressure In Women the Office on Women’s Health, United States Department of Health and Human Services elaborate on:

“Promoting “Strong Hearts: Everyday Actions for Blood Pressure Control and Lifelong Health” means making heart healthy habits part of everyday life. The theme emphasizes practical actions women can take to maintain healthy blood pressure and protect their heart health while reinforcing the connection between blood pressure and chronic disease risk across the lifespan. It also highlights key life transitions, including pregnancy, the postpartum period, and perimenopause/menopause, when blood pressure can change”.

Heart Health

What is the association between heart health and blood pressure?

In NWBPAW Focus Areas – Turning Blood Pressure Awareness Into Action the OWH explain:

“High blood pressure is also a major risk factor for heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S.”.

Menopause

Is there an association between menopause and high blood pressure?

In Menopause and High Blood Pressure: What’s the Connection? Is There A Connection Between Menopause and High Blood Pressure? the (United States) Mayo Clinic explain:

“Blood pressure tends to go up after menopause. Some healthcare professionals think changing hormones related to menopause may cause blood pressure to rise. Others think an increase in body mass index, also called BMI, during menopause may be the cause.

Changes in hormones during menopause can lead to weight gain. Also, these changes can make blood pressure more sensitive to salt in the diet. When this happens, blood pressure can go up. Some types of hormone therapy for menopause may lead to higher blood pressure as well”.

Silent Killer

Why can high blood pressure be known as the “silent killer”?

In NWBPAW Theme – Blood Pressure In Women the OWH note:

“High blood pressure often has no signs or symptoms, but over time, it can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other serious health problems. When women do experience symptoms, they may include headaches, chest pain, dizziness or lightheadedness, fatigue, or shortness of breath”.

Health Care Provider

What if I think I have high blood pressure?

In NWBPAW Focus Areas – Turning Blood Pressure Awareness Into Action the OWH explain:

“Blood pressure is closely connected to heart health, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Prevention and early action can help reduce risk, while ongoing monitoring and appropriate care can help people manage high blood pressure and protect their health over time”.
