Endometriosis does not necessarily stop when your periods stop. More research is required to explain how endometriosis may be a life-long medical condition.

What is endometriosis?

In Endometriosis: Symptoms the World Endometriosis Society’s definition is:

“Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (called “the endometrium”), is found outside the uterus, where it induces a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in scar tissue.

It is primarily found on the pelvic peritoneum, on the ovaries, in the recto-vaginal septum, on the bladder, and bowel”.

Postmenopause does endometriosis magically disappear?

In Endometriosis and Menopausal Health: An EMAS Clinical Guide: 1. Introduction, published November 2025, the authors quote the statistic:

“Overall, it affects 5-10% of women of reproductive age and 2-5% after the menopause”.

The authors of Endometriosis and Menopausal Health: An EMAS Clinical Guide: 1. Introduction also elaborate on:

“Postmenopausal endometriosis is considered to have a more complex pathophysiology than premenopausal disease. It remains unclear whether postmenopausal endometriosis arises as a recurrence or persistence of a pre-existing lesion or develops de novo. This may be partly due to diagnostic delays of approximately 6 to 8 years in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women”.

“For some women, the painful symptoms of endometriosis improve after menopause. As the body stops making the hormone estrogen, the growths shrink slowly. However, some women who take menopausal hormone therapy may still have symptoms of endometriosis.

If you are having symptoms of endometriosis after menopause, talk to your doctor about treatment options”.
