Crash Menopause

“Menopause comes as a shock for nearly a third of
people who experience early onset menopause
caused by cancer treatment”.1

Umbrella

What may the Crash Menopause Umbrella include?

Depending on the Source (DotS) this Umbrella may include:

  • Cancer Induced Menopause
  • Cancer Treatment-Induced Menopause
  • Early Menopause
  • Early Onset Menopause
  • Premature Menopause
  • Surgical Menopause
  • Surgically Induced Menopause
  • Treatment Induced Early Menopause

Induced Menopause

What is induced menopause?

DotS the definition of induced menopause may vary. In Premature Menopause: Induced Menopause the (United States) Menopause Society’s (formerly the North American Menopause Society) definition is:

“Induced menopause occurs when a medical treatment, such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, removes or seriously damages both ovaries. The reason for the medical treatment may affect whether hormone therapy will be recommended.

  • Surgery: When both ovaries are surgically removed, menopause results. Cancer is a common reason for this surgery. Removing both ovaries may be done to treat ovarian cancer or to help prevent breast and ovarian cancer in women who are considered to be at high risk
  • Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is a powerful drug therapy to treat various types of cancer. It may be used along with surgery, radiation therapy, or both
  • Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy uses high-energy particles or waves to damage cancer cells and reduce their size or keep them from growing”.2

Crash Menopause

What is crash menopause?

To date, December 2025, the term crash menopause is not commonly defined in menopause evidence-based literature.

However, the term crash menopause may be used to mean:

  • Cancer Induced Menopause
  • Early onset menopause caused by cancer treatment

Cancer Diagnosis + Early Onset Menopause Research

Can menopause come as a shock for people who experience early onset menopause caused by cancer treatment?

In Shock of Early ‘Crash’ Menopause Caused By Cancer Treatment, dated 04 October 2023, the (United Kingdom) cancer charity Maggie’s elaborate on:

“Menopause comes as a shock for nearly a third of people who experience early onset menopause caused by cancer treatment”.3

In their research published in Strictly Come Dancing Star Amy Dowden Supports Maggie’s To Keep the Conversation Going About ‘Crash Menopause’, dated 15 October 2024, Maggie’s also note:

  • “71% of the women polled who had received a cancer diagnosis were not aware they may experience an early onset menopause”.4

Crash Menopause

Early Menopause and Premature Menopause

Is early menopause the same as premature menopause?

In Later Years (Around 50 Years and Over): Menopause and Post Menopause Health – Early and Premature Menopause the (Scottish) NHS Inform explain:

“Menopause before the age of 45 is called early menopause. Menopause before the age of 40 is called premature menopause”.5

Symptoms

Are the symptoms of early menopause the same as menopause symptoms?

Yes and no. In Premature and Early Menopause: What Causes Premature and Early Menopause? Symptoms of Premature and Early Menopause the JH explain:

“Symptoms of premature and early menopause are like those you would experience if you reached menopause at the expected age of 51 to 52 years, but symptoms can often be more severe due to the sudden change in hormone levels”.6
Crash Menopause

Hormone Therapy

Crash MenopauseIs hormone therapy recommended for crash menopause?

On page three of Menopause and Menopause Hormone Therapy: 1. Who Is MHT For? Women With Existing Medical Conditions the International Menopause Society’s (IMS) Leaflet for Women for World Menopause Day 2024, the IMS explain:

“Deciding to use MHT is a personal choice and should involve discussions about the benefits and risks with a healthcare professional who knows your health history”.7

Health Care Provider

What if I have not bounced back after crash menopause?

In Premature and Early Menopause: What Causes Premature and Early Menopause? How To Manage Premature and Early Menopause: Emotional Wellbeing the JH elaborate:

“It’s important to talk to someone if you feel anxious or depressed after your diagnosis. Your doctor can help with symptom relief and refer you to a psychologist if needed”.8

It's most common to start having symptoms of perimenopause in your 40s. Those symptoms include irregular periods, vaginal dryness and, yes, hot flashes. As many as 3 in 4 people will have hot flashes in the years leading up to menopause.

Scientists don’t know the exact reasoning
