“Exact figures on the number of post-menopausal women and the number reaching menopause every year are difficult to obtain”.1

Date and Age

What may it be important to be clear about with postmenopause statistics?

I think it is important to be clear about the date of all information including the year of postmenopause statistics because this information may have been updated.

I also think it is important to be clear about the age of women in postmenopause statistics because this may be different e.g. Age Younger than 51 or 51, 52, or 55 years or older than 64 years.

United States

In the United States, how many women are postmenopausal?

The NAMS caution:

“Exact figures on the number of post-menopausal women and the number reaching menopause every year are difficult to obtain”.2

The NAMS note:

“An estimated 6,000 US women reach menopause every day (more than 2 million per year)”.3

Other figures quoted by the NAMS are:

Postmenopause Statistics“There were an estimated 50 million postmenopausal women in the United States in 2010. About 45 million of them were aged older than 52 years, the average age of natural menopause in the Western world. By the year 2020, the number of US women aged older than 51 years is expected to be more than 50 million”.4

In Menopause Perspectives Around the World – North America: The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) – Women Served the NAMS note:

“Within the US, an estimated 48 million women are postmenopausal; for Canada and Mexico the estimates are 5 and 9 million, respectively”.5

Canada

In Canada, how many women will be postmenopausal by 2026?

According to numbers quoted by the NAMS:

“By 2026, it is estimated that almost one-quarter (22%) of the Canadian population will be composed of women older than age 50”.6

Australia

In Australia, how many women are postmenopausal?

In April 2014, the Australian Menopause Society note:

“The importance of the menopause can best be comprehended when it is realised that there are over 2 million post-menopausal women in Australia, and that every year about 80,000 new women join this group. These women constitute 40% of all health care visits in Australia”.7
