Sarcopenia

“Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle
and strength that can occur with aging,
especially in people who are less physically active”.1

Umbrella

What may the Sarcopenia Umbrella include?

Depending on the Source (DotS) this Umbrella may include:

  • Age-relate muscle loss
  • Loss of Muscle Mass, Strength and Function
  • Sarcopenia

Definition

What is sarcopenia?

DotS the definition of sarcopenia may vary. In About Sarcopenia: What Is Sarcopenia? the (United States) Office on Women’s Health (OWH), United States Department of Health and Human Services, Womenshealth.gov’s definition is:

“Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle and strength that can occur with aging, especially in people who are less physically active”.2

Cause

What is the most common cause of sarcopenia?

In Sarcopenia: Symptoms and Causes – What Is the Main Cause of Sarcopenia? the (United States) Cleveland Clinic include:

“The most common cause of sarcopenia is the natural aging process. As you age, your body goes through changes that affect your muscles. You don’t make protein as well, which your muscles need to grow and repair. Changes in hormones like testosterone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) also play a role”.3

Begin

When does sarcopenia begin?

In Sarcopenia the OWH explain:

“Typically, sarcopenia begins around age 30, when the body naturally loses about 3-5% of its muscle mass per decade. These changes often become more noticeable by age 60 and continue to progress with aging. When muscle and strength loss start to interfere with daily activities—such as walking, standing up, or carrying groceries—it may be a sign of sarcopenia”.4

Symptoms

What are some common symptoms of sarcopenia?

The OWH explain:

“Common symptoms of sarcopenia include falls, muscle weakness, slow walking speed, and difficulty doing everyday activities, such as standing from a chair, twisting the lid off a jar, or carrying groceries. Over time, this loss of strength can lead to decreased independence, more frequent hospital visits, higher health care costs, and a greater risk of falls, fractures, and even death”.5

Healthy Habits

How may sarcopenia be addressed?

In About Sarcopenia: How To Address Sarcopenia the OWH elaborate on:

“Currently, there is no medication available to treat sarcopenia. However, healthy habits such as physical activity can help rebuild strength, improve muscle mass, and reduce the risk of developing the condition. The combination of strength or resistance training (a form of exercise that involves muscles working against a force, such as weights, resistance bands, or body weight) and a healthy diet is key to increasing strength and energy, improving muscle mass, and maintaining the ability to perform regular activities that are important to quality of life and independence”.6

Sarcopenia

Health Care Provider

What if I think I have sarcopenia?

In About Sarcopenia: How To Address Sarcopenia the OWH also note:

“It is important to talk with a health care provider before starting a new exercise routine, especially for those with existing health conditions”.7

In Sarcopenia: When Should I See My Healthcare Provider? the Cleveland Clinic encourage us to:

“Call your provider if you’ve experienced:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of endurance
  • Any other symptoms of sarcopenia
  • They can develop a treatment plan to help you reverse your muscle loss and manage the condition”.8
