“World Menopause Day is held each year on the 18th October to raise awareness of midlife women’s health. The 2018 awareness campaign concentrates on Sexual wellbeing after menopause.

Sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being related to sexuality. After menopause it is not uncommon for women to experience sexual problems which can severely impair their relationships, mental health, social functioning and overall quality of life. This campaign aims to show that it is treatable”.4

In World Menopause Day: World Menopause Day 2018 – Patient Information Leaflet: Sexual Wellbeing After Menopause the IMS explain:

“The patient information leaflet is a guide to help women in mid life find their way through any sexual problems which can severely impair their relationships, mental health, social functioning and overall quality of life”.5

On page two in their Patient Information Leaflet Sexual Wellbeing After Menopause the IMS note:

“The most commonly reported sexual problems experienced by women after menopause relate to sexual desire and interest, pleasure and overall satisfaction. Vaginal dryness and discomfort with intercourse are also common problems. Sometimes loss of libido and arousal is simply explained by the hormonal changes. But at midlife, as at any life phase, other factors such as poor self-image, family responsibilities, less opportunity for privacy, and partner health affect sexual wellbeing”.6

White Paper

What is the IMS’s Sexual Well-Being After Menopause: An International Menopause Society White Paper?

On page two of Sexual Well-Being After Menopause: An International Menopause Society White Paper the IMS explain:

“Sexual well-being frequently declines following the menopause transition and can be associated with significant personal and relationship distress. This distress is the hallmark of female sexual dysfunction (FSD). The International Menopause Society is working to increase awareness of FSD and to provide a framework for practitioners to address sexual medicine concerns. This White Paper aims to review the process of care for female sexual well-being following menopause, from initially approaching the discussion of FSD, to identifying clinical signs and symptoms, and ultimately determining the best available biopsychosocial therapies”.7
